Types of Crime Analysis Crime analysis is a process that consists of collecting, analyzing, and evaluating information gathered from sources to understand the context of a crime or incident. To do this effectively, one must understand the various types of crime analysis. The goal of crime analysis is to deliver timely information regarding patterns and trends in crime through a systematic procedure. Law enforcement uses the information that is obtained in a variety of ways, including solving crimes, catching criminals, and allocating resources for the police (Chapter 8). In this process, law enforcement officers use a variety of analytical techniques. This text discusses four different types of crime analysis, how-the-crime-happened analyses; who's responsible for the crime analyses; what happened in the incident analyses; and fallout from the event analyses.
